Anatomy Photo References

Amanda's Secrets Revealed

For way to long I struggled to get my dolls to look half-decent.

Anatomy photo references were difficult to find, so I just couldn't be bothered searching. I just wanted to get my hands into that clay! I didn't want to be measuring out armatures and tediously measuring facial features on photos.

When I started looking through my photos of past dolls and realized I just wasn't improving, I decided something needed to be done.

Sculpting from memory really limits people. You're limited by what your brain wants to remember about anatomy... and if you're anything like me- that isn't a lot.

Endless hours of scouring the internet for anatomy photo references turned up average results. It was difficult because to truly improve my abilities, I needed good references. Finding references for drawings was easy. However, to create a 3D sculpture I needed to find anatomy photo references that photographed a Model in a pose from every angle. This was such a challenge!

Thankfully, I finally found what I was looking for!

There are a few sister websites (meaning websites from the same producers) which are just as helpful:

www.human-anatomy-for-artist.com
www.female-anatomy-for-artist.com
www.environment-textures.com

female anatomy

So what is so great about these websites?

They all offer FREE samples of their photos. This is brilliant because most doll makers who are just starting up cannot afford to pay for their reference photos. Each of these websites will supply you with photos that will allow you to start training your anatomy knowledge.

Furthermore, these sites OVER DELIVER on amazing resources for a relatively small fee. For example, the female anatomy website has two different subscriptions available:

The Commercial membership allows you or your company to use all of our photos in your own commercial projects such as book covers, illustrations, video games, etc. All their photos are royalty free, so you can use them for your commercial projects without additional payment.

This is a fantastic option for those who wish to use the reference photos in tutorials or work-in-progress portfolios.

The Hobby membership is intended for private individuals and hobbyists and allows the use of all of their photos exclusively for personal non-commercial projects. This membership allows you to post and showcase any of your own work based on their photos in web galleries.

This is a perfect solution to doll makers everywhere. These memberships allow you to download full quality, large photos from every angle in neat little zip file.

Even if you only pay for a month of a membership, you are still able to download up to a massive 250 photos per day! That's about 7,500 professional photos for only a one month fee.

I snapped up that opportunity really fast.

Why sign up to an ongoing membership?

They update their websites 15 times a month! Wow. Even I can't keep up with those sort of updates. You can be sure that their content will never get stale.

I've been using these websites for years now and have decided to spread the word by being an affiliate. These guys are the main reason I have improved at all.

Don't underestimate the value of using good anatomy reference photos.

Don't want to view nude photos?

That is perfectly fine. Some people don't want to have to look at nude people to be able to create art. However, study is still required in order to improve.

So what can you do?

Consider signing up for the virtual gallery at OOAK Doll Art. This website has a virtual gallery where there are human reference pictures... but all the pictures are computer generated. None of the figures are real, so it might be a suitable substitute for the more modest audience.

Whichever way you go, be sure to always use anatomy photo references. Studying the world around you will help your art grow.

Strengthen your ability to express yourself.
